Africa now holds a continental intellectual property framework that is the first of its kind. Africa IP Day 2026 asked what it will take to make that framework usable by the innovators and enterprises it was designed to serve.
The AfCFTA Secretariat marked Africa IP Day 2026 on 10 September in Accra, under the theme Growing Business Under the AfCFTA IP Ecosystem. It was the first commemoration held since the adoption of the Annexes to the AfCFTA Protocol on Intellectual Property Rights, which complete a continental framework without precedent on the continent.
The programme brought together policymakers, intellectual property practitioners, innovators, creators, private sector representatives and finance experts, and recognised six African innovators and entrepreneurs through My IP Story and the SG Prize.
